Trading ship called the Bremen Cog circa 1380. Keiths Model of trimaran that Ellen McArthur sailed
It is 40in. overall length and 13in. beam, flat bottomed , plank on frame and is clinker built. The full sized ships were about 70ft long , so the scale is 1/20th.I stained the sail cloth and hull with creosote to create an aroma of tar as would have been used along with moss for caulking the planks. The hull is solid ,closed cell, blue polystyrene to make it unsinkable. The outriggers have a plywood sandwhich construction for maximum strength and lightness. It has been externally papered with small patches of newspaper that have been glued on with pva. and then painted over. This is a 6ft. 10" 'A' class hull of Bill Daniel's 'Amethyst'. I initially made a plank on frame, mahogany hull several years ago before my arthritis stopped my woodworking days. I still have this hull and from it I took a fibreglass mould. These boats are very graceful sailers in all conditions and are very easy on the nerves. This barge is 30" long and is based on a Humber sloop barge called the 'Amy Howson' .She has a fibreglass hull and uses a centre board keel to allow her to have a yacht like sailing performance. The keel is held in place by a pin which can be removed to allow the barge to be displayed as she originally was designed.
