Boston Typhoon Kit

Hi All

I went to the model boat show at Ellesmere Port today - a very nice event. Whilst there I had a chat with Mountfleet Models because their Boston Typhoon had really caught my eye. Now £570 is a serious wedge of my very hard earned cash so I thought I might ask you guys for your thoughts. I've not built a kit before and I am not an experienced modeller. However I am totally serious about getting right into the hobby and I finish what I start - that stubborness is more of a fault than a quality at times though. Lately I've been refurbing a 1950's Hales Spraymaster while I have been getting info for an art deco ferry build (that's held up by getting the plans drawn)

Prizing £570 out of my hands is going to be difficult but with your encouragement I'm willing to give it a go because I am not yet competent to scatch build that vessel.

So I am asking about your view of the model, experiences with the kit, would you do it differently than the build says to?
Oh and is there too much weight in all that white metal? Finally, any images of her as the Boston Typhoon or later would be appreciated.

Regards Dave

Cobble Boats

Thank for reply, I think you right building a cobble from photo's might be the way forward.

The main problem is the hull, I would like to build the wooden hull as the originals where built.

I know there are fibre glass hulls available but this would be a last resort. Above the deck as it where is not a problem as there are many different types.

Research suggest that most cobbles where built without plans & relied on the skill of the boat builder, but it looks like this skill is now lost with the decline of fishing and restrictions put upon the fisherman.

Any help to find any sort of hull lines / drawings would be welcome not only by me, but I think many other modellers.

Our web site intpostage.com offers you to participate in an exchange of post cards and souvenirs all over the world. At present our database includes lots of Russian users, who would like to exchange post cards and souvenirs. Therefore, we decided to give an opportunity to the users from all countries (except for Russia) to participate in the exchange without any fair check. It means that some time after registration you will definitely receive a post card or a souvenir from Russia, Ukraine, or Belarus, etc.
All you have to do is to check in and indicate your correct address for paper mailing.

I am building a couple of model yachts with a friend.
They will be plywood based, and be around
4-5ft long with beams of 15 inches.

It is our intention to sail them in the sea, but our
experience with model yacht sailing is confined to
inland lakes and ponds.

Currently we are carrying out tests with
sails based around IOM rigs numbers 2 and 3.
but we will soon be in a position to try them in the sea.

Our question is what material should we be looking at
for the sails (e.g.canvas, polythene etc).

regards

Eric

Hello everybody, I felt I had to join and express my views regarding the wonderful model by John an Phil. A superb achievement in every respect. I wonder if there is a description of the build anywhere?
Being from Portsmouth I have seen the ship many times. In fact I saw her only the other day. A sad sight now moored at the rear of the dockyard and stripped bare looking as I say very sorry for herself. The sight has prompted me to attempt to build a 1/144 static waterline model for the mantlepiece! Having been a railway modeller for the last 50 years I am probably crazy. Any (constructive) advice would be most welcome.

All the best.
